A fabulous melting pot of hip-hop, funk and soul! The Roots |
|

"Just to let you know, you are rocking to the best!" screamed Black Thought, the co-founding member of Philadelphia’s (and for many the world's) greatest hip-hop outfit, The Roots. And that's no wild statement. The Roots were simply magnificent experienced live.
For the first 45 minutes of the show, the band belted out songs (from their vast discography) fast and furious with hardly a breather in between, sparing no prisoners with their tight live instrumentation, killer rhymes and consummate showmanship. Moving through various styles like old skool hip-hop, R&B, soul, 60s surf, and jazz with ease, the Roots kept things funky, in the pocket and a whole lot of fun, even segueing mischievously into other tunes like Justin Timberlake's Sexyback and John Coltrane's My Favorite Things.
Kicking the party up another notch, drummer ?uestlove and percussionist Frankie Knuckles launched into a drum battle, teasing the audience with their beats and climaxing in a blistering drum solo by the impeccable ?uestlove. The drum interval also served as a half-time entertainment of sorts and cued in the band’s second set of materials that geared towards more an urban, R&B/soul repertoire that further showcased each member’s solo abilities.
Captain Kirk Douglas was undeniably the guitar god of the night, shredding a heart-achingly beautiful guitar solo with Prince-like flamboyancy, while sousaphone player Damon "Tuba Gooding Jr." Bryson was a delight to watch, as he spun, turned and danced around with the huge instrument as if it was the easiest and lightest thing in the world.
As The Roots ended the night on an exhilarating high, particularly on the song The Seed (2.0), they had proven that hip-hop isn't about the bling and posing that many hip-hop artists display all too often these days. Instead, the really good stuff lies in true musicianship and music that moves people both in their hearts and on their feet! |

Aural Feast
Fujiya & Miyagi |
|

The best way to describe Brighton-based group Fujiya & Miyagi’s sound is that it’s like stew: a whole array of sonic ingredients tossed into a pot and mixed to create a deliciously danceable dish all on its own. And, like with anything good to eat, everyone at the Heineken Music Club was clamouring for seconds.
The boys — David Best on vocals and guitar, Steve Lewis on synths, Matt Hainsby on bass and Lee Adams on drums — started their set with the chilled out Ankle Injuries, only to break into the irresistibly danceable Uh. From then on, it was track after track of thumping electro beats laced with influences of everything from rock to synthpop and reggae grooves.
The night reached boiling point with the funky In One Ear and Out The Other, which boasted a bad-ass bass beat mildly reminiscent of the classic Queen hit Another One Bites The Dust. With the audience grinding along frenetically, the guys segued into the tribal-influenced Electro Karoke, before making their exit.
But the crowd wasn't having any of it. Instantly, chants of "Encore!" filled the room. Not ones to disappoint, F & M were back out again for the rocking and distortion-heavy Collarbone and, finally, the groovy Knickerbocker.
The set may have only lasted an hour, but judging by the audience's satisfied looks, it's safe to say that Fujiya & Miyagi delivered one heck of an aural feast. |
