"Let's have bizarre celebrations!" of Montreal sings in Wraith Pinned to the Mist and Other Games. And the band does just that in its live concerts.
Tripping out with high-energy electro-pop, synthesised grooves, wacky lyrics, flamboyant costumes and madcap onstage theatrics, of Montreal gives performances that are more hedonistic party than music concert.
Constantly shape-shifting, of Montreal's music cares little for convention or logical sequence. Like founder, songwriter and frontman Kevin Barnes' multiple transgender personalities - which see him morphing from prude to bawd, romantic to sleaze, straight dude to transsexual in the band's latest album Skeletal Lamping, a work that delves into the multi-facetted human psyche - of Montreal's lyrics and music skip from image to image, thought to thought and sound to sound.
Through nutty vaudeville, melancholic indie-pop, groovy disco-funk, slinky electro groove and stomping krautrock, of Montreal is consistently purposeful, playful and surreal, conjuring up images of a digital Babes in Toyland for adults only or Midsummer Night's Dream gone happily psychedelic.
Over 10 years and nine albums, of Montreal has garnered a cult status and fascinated crowds at the Coachella and Pitchfork Music Festivals and the Sundance Film Festival.
