A new component that we're adding in line with the
Bright Young Things is the
Jazz Weekend Workshop, which will be held on 11 and 12 December, from 11am to 6pm at Lasalle College of the Arts, with a nominal fee of $15 for both days. This weekend is intended for youths and young adults who are interested to find out more about the jazz genre. In addition to being led through a brief history of jazz, with examples of the different styles performed live by the mentor band, participants will also learn a few key jazz elements (e.g. improvisation, syncopation, call-and-response) and hear local jazz professionals speak about their musical career.
Participants between the ages of 15 and 25 who can proficiently play at least one musical instrument can also choose to audition to be a Bright Young Thing between 5 and 6pm each day. They will be assessed both as a solo performer, and also as a musician in a band. Candidates are asked to prepare a medium tempo jazz standard, and will be tested on sight-reading and improvisation.
