Blonde Redhead USA 15 Feb 2011, Tue, 9.30pm $80, $60**, $40*

Calling all hipsters, loungers, discerning listeners… Blonde Redhead's sublime music is electronic-leaning, dreamy, beautiful and (in the words of a critic) "ridiculously easy to listen to". And watching them live, you'll agree that this is a band that's just as easy to adore.

"Dream pop" and "murky bass lines" – these are some of the descriptors that you'd expect bowled-over critics to lavish on Blonde Redhead's brand of music.

The feted outfit's dissonant guitars and quiet stilted lyrics have often been compared to the styles of early Sonic Youth. The band was formed in 1993, after Japanese art students, Kazu Makino and Maki Takahashi, and Italian twin brothers, Simone and Amedeo Pace, met randomly at an Italian restaurant in New York. The name was taken from a song by the 1980s no wave band, DNA.

With Kazu and Amedeo taking on guitars and vocals, Simone on drums and Maki on bass, the band whipped up chaotic art rock that caught the attention of Sonic Youth drummer, Steve Shelley, who later produced the band's self-titled debut album. After Maki's departure shortly after the album's release in 1995, the remaining members continued as a trio, releasing a second album, La Mia Vita Violenta, that same year.

In the course of the band's ongoing musical odyssey and experimentations, more albums were released – from Fake Can Be Just as Good (1997) and In an Expression of the Inexpressible (1998), to Misery is a Butterfly (2004) and 23 (2007), both of which were released on one of alternative music's most respected labels, 4AD (Cocteau Twins, The Pixies).

Released in September 2010, Penny Sparkle is the band's eighth studio album and third for 4AD. Achieving their highest position on the US album charts, it marks another sonic twist in their already adventurous canon – this time, featuring the magical touch of production duo, Van Rivers and The Subliminal Kid (Fever Ray), and mixer Alan Moulder (Depeche Mode, Yeah Yeah Yeahs).

Always building and beautiful, their sparse, even minimal, approach lends Penny Sparkle a complexity that's both rich and rewarding in both its inspiration and execution. – BBC Music
