Tetsu Saitoh performs solo in double bass in the first
set. Known for his exploratory compositions and ingenuity with
the double bass, Tetsu has been involved in dance, theatre, visual arts,
poetry,
Japanese traditional music, tango, jazz, and Asian shamanism for
decades. Tetsu has performed with the Kanagawa Philharmonic Orchestra
and in Europe
with such artists as Barre Phillips, Michel Doneda and Alain Joule,
and organised bass trio October Bass Tri-logue.
His performance is followed by a duet between acclaimed Cuban jazz/classical
violinist Omar Puente and renowned British-Caribbean jazz/classical composer/lyricist/pianist
Robert Mitchell. The two perform pieces from their critically-acclaimed
collaborative album, Bridges, a stunning blend of Cuban, jazz and classical
overtones.
Described by Weekly Journal as the "hottest young talent on the
London scene", and twice nominated for the BBC Jazz Awards, Robert
leads six-piece group Panacea (which played the North Sea Jazz Fest
2006),
a trio, and currently plays with Jhelisa Anderson,Vaughn Hawthorne,
in a duo with Julian Seigel. Cuban-born Omar Puente studied classical
music
by day in Cuba’s best music schools and Latin jazz and Cuban music
by night in Havana’s music halls at the feet of Chucho Valdez,
Arturo Sandoval, Ruben Gonzales and Guillermo Rubalcaba. Omar is
now a member of The Courtney Pine Band.
Finally, the three come together in an exciting finale. This is
a double bill that is not to be missed.
